Extraction of rare earth elements (REEs) from ionic clays is a focused research area within the Laboratory for Strategic Materials, aimed at developing efficient and environmentally responsible alternatives to conventional rare earth production. Ionic clay deposits present unique challenges due to low grades, complex mineralogy, and sensitivity to aggressive chemical treatments. Our research emphasizes selective leaching, controlled ion-exchange processes, and downstream separation strategies to recover REEs while minimizing reagent consumption and environmental impact. By advancing hydrometallurgical approaches tailored to ionic clays, our work contributes to diversified and sustainable REE supply chains and supports the responsible utilization of these unconventional but strategically important resources.
